Big Sand Lake (29018500) is located about 2.5 miles north of Dorset in Hubbard County, Minnesota. Big Sand Lake is 1,659 acres in surface area with a maximum depth of 135 feet and exceptional water clarity.
Public access for small boats is available from the inlet connecting to Lake Emma and from the outlet connecting to Lake Ida. There is also public access located on the southeast shore of Big Sand lake at the outlet.
Big Sand is noted for an outstanding walleye fishery producing large walleyes. Big Sand lake fishing includes black crappie, bluegill, largemouth bass, northern pike, pumpkinseed, rock bass, smallmouth bass, tullibee, walleye, white sucker, yellow bullhead, and yellow perch.

Big Sand Lake is a beautiful lake that provides many opportunities to enjoy water sports of all types. The lake has a heavily wooded backdrop, and clear, deep water. Big Sand Lake also has an inlet from Lake Emma and an outlet from Lake Ida that small boats can travel through. Big Sand Lake is known for its excellent fishing for anglers and big fish fishermen. The lake attracts many visitors who like to bike, boat, camp, canoe, fish, hike, swim, and spend time in the great outdoors.
The Sandy Lake Recreation Area is situated at the outlet of Big Sandy Lake, and includes over 60 campsites. The site is part of the historic canoe route, connecting the Mississippi River to Lake Superior, that was used by major fur trading companies. Many tourists enjoy this camping area because there is a small museum located near the dam that holds many interesting artifacts. Visitors also enjoy these campsites because of the great scenery and commodoties that are offered.
There are 43 single family camps, five double family sites, and two group sites with electric hookups. Eight of the sites are walk-to tent sites and there is a camper cabin with bunk beds. Picnic shelters, flush and vault restrooms, showers, drinking water, laundry facilities and a dump station are also available to the public. The camping area also offers playgrounds for the kids, a hiking trail, and many water activities. There are two lake boat ramps, one river boat ramp, docks, a pier for fishing, and plenty of beach areas for swimming!
Along with the camp sites, there are also many nearby attractions conveniently located in Big Sand area. Close by is the Land O'Lakes State Forest, with camping, swimming, and nature hike options. Only three miles south of Big Sand Lake is the Heartland Trail and the small village of Dorset, which is considered restaurant capital of the world.
The Heartland Trail stretches between Park Rapids and Walker, has a 27-mile paved bike trail, and a total of 49 miles of multiple-use trail available to the public. Dorset is considered a tourism crossroads and offers many different activites for it's visitors. There are several festivals during the summer, restaraunts with great food, bed-and-breakfast, shopping, and a nice playground for the children!
Big Sand Lake also has a couple big resort options for those who like to sit back and relax, but still be in the reach of technology. Balsam Bay Resort is one of the popular resorts the tourists love. The resort has cozy cabins to rent and a nice RV park in a scenic location on Big Sand Lake. Balsam Bay Resort offers many fun activities like fishing, swimming in a heated pool, ATV and bike riding on nearby trails, a game room with satellite TV for the kids, volleyball, and relaxing on outdoor hammocks.
Another well-known family resort on Big Sand Lake is Evergreen Lodge. One special feature of this lodge is the 1000' beach that is on shallow, clear and unpolluted water, and a drop-off free lake bottom, which is good for swimming and water games.
For the guests who enjoy bike riding, the Heartland Trail is accessable only a couple miles from the resort. The trail is now fully black-topped for 27 miles, stretching from Park Rapids to Walker, with rest stops inbetween. The Evergreen Lodge also has a new disk golf course and fire pits to roast marshmallows after an adventurous day.
